What are the design loads for glass barriers?

Three design loads are typically applied to glass barriers:

  • Horizontal uniformly distributed line load (kN/m run) - usually applied to the handrail, if present
  • Uniformly distributed load (UDL) applied to the infill (kN/m2)
  • Concentrated (point) load applied to part of the infill (kN)

Once the above design loads have been confirmed for a project, it is possible to determine a suitable glass type and thickness. Barrier load calculations can be undertaken using our Mechanical Strength online calculator available through MyPilkington. To register for MyPilkington click here.
